Joseph Ward Simmons, better known as Reverend Run or Rev. Run, is an influential American musician recognized as one of the original members of hip hop band Run-D.M.C. The group was founded in the early 1980s, in Queens, by Joseph and his friends: Darryl McDaniels, (stage name D.M.C.) and Jason Mizell (stage name Jam Master Jay). Run-D.M.C ascended to stardom in 1984, following the release of eponymous debut album. By the end of the decade it was often mentioned as one of the most influential hip-hop groups in the United States, along with such legends as The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and LL Cool J.
